Can I Drink Alcohol if I Take Erectile Dysfunction Medication?

Alcohol & Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction, also called ED, is defined as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection before or during sexual intercourse. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, more than 30 million people in the United States are affected by this condition.

On account of the social construct surrounding Erectile Dysfunction, it remains an undiscussed topic in most households. However, if left unaddressed, it can intensify any underlying illness that causes Erectile Dysfunction.

The risk factors for Erectile Dysfunction include high blood pressure, vascular disease, diabetes, prostate problems, high blood cholesterol, neurogenic disorders, and chronic diseases. Apart from this, addictive behaviors such as substance abuse, smoking, and alcoholism can aggravate medical problems directly linked to ED. Mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, and insomnia are also predominant agents of Erectile Dysfunction.

In any case, you should consult your general physician first to understand the root cause of your condition. In most cases, doctors prescribe medications and pills to reverse erectile issues. However, it is important to know and understand how the consumption of alcohol can alter the effect of these medications.

Alcohol and Sexual Activity

While it is true that candles and a glass of red wine can set the right tone before sex, excessive drinking can prevent the occurrence of an erection. Disproportionate alcohol consumption can also cause Erectile Dysfunction in the longer run.

Since alcohol impacts the Central Nervous System (CNS), it reduces the brain signals and testosterone levels involved in a healthy erection.

How ED Medications Function

The medications used to treat erectile issues boost the effects of nitric oxide inside the body, thereby relaxing the muscles in the penis. This relaxation widens the blood vessels and increases blood flow to the penis. When blood vessels dilate, the blood pressure decreases. This process is called vasodilation.

The presence of alcoholic content inside the body can also, at times, alter blood pressure levels. Hence, it isn’t advisable to indulge in drinking before popping your pills for ED. The combined effect of the prescribed drugs with alcohol can mess up your blood flow, posing a threat to your cardiovascular system.

Alcohol and Erectile Dysfunction Medication

If you are on Erectile Dysfunction medications, it is best to avoid mixing alcohol with them. While liquor thwarts the effects of erection pills, it can also worsen the side effects, which include headache, flushing, vision problems, nasal congestion, diarrhea, dizziness, and rash.

As ED is more common in older people, combining alcohol with Erectile medication is riskier for them because of their weaker immunity against illnesses.

Ideal Time Frame Between ED Medications and Alcohol Consumption

Since Erectile Dysfunction Medications are supposed to be taken a few hours before engaging in sexual intercourse, you should keep tabs on your alcohol consumption. Generally speaking, the effects of ED Medications wear off after 1-5 days of consumption.

It is better to have all bodily systems devoid of drugs before cracking open a beer bottle for yourself.

While Erectile Dysfunction can be an uncomfortable topic for people to discuss with their spouses or partners, it is important to consult a physician or a urologist. More often than not, ED is a symptom of an underlying disease or a chronic illness. It can also be a call to address a mental health issue.
